“Hey, guess what. I’ll be VJing at Resistance Stage Ultra Singapore next month!” One message arrived from our good friend Luwky at Malang by the end of May 2017. Yup, he just told us that he was officially signed to handle visuals at Resistance Stage on Ultra Singapore. For 10-11 June 2017, Luwky doing live visuals that will set the mood for entire performance. Luwky is young man from Malang who already make name in local nightlife scene as one of the DJ/Music Producer and also a VJ to be reckoned with. He developed his interest in animation since college time. Luwky was a college student majoring in Design and took specialization in animation. “Actually, the potential from local animator is huge, but they still think that animator only works in field of television, movie, or even animation studio. Animation is beyond that!” said Luwky. When some of his friends decided to move outside of Malang, Luwky decided to stay in Malang. His first animation project was developing animation for Jatim Park, an amusement park in Malang. Luwky developed animation for Darkrides, interactive installation for kids, multi display system, and game development. He also founded animation studio called SidechainLabs and served as Creative Director. Although he’s a DJ, basically Luwky is a shy person. He preferred to stay behind and being VJ can accommodate his passion in music. “It’s fun to be a VJ. I can explore in stage design and show direction at the event,” said Luwky. Luwky also added, being a DJ meaning they supply music for people to listen. “As a VJ, we supply visuals for the eyes. A DJ performance without good visuals, will be plain boring,” said Luwky. According to Luwky, VJ performance contributed in about 50% of the successful DJ performance. His VJ career already got acknowledge both locally and international. Back in 2015, Luwky was chosen as finalist for Japan One Minutes International Projection Mapping Festival, and this year he became VJ for Ultra Singapore. The process quite fast. “I have role model in VJing, his name is Vello Virkhaus of VsquaredLabs. I’ve known him through social media. I have the opportunity to meet his team, Grant Davis aka VJ Culture, back in 2015 during Ultra Bali,” said Luwky. “Sometimes I try to chat Vello on Facebook, and keeps connect with Grant on Instagram,” he added. By the beginning of May 2017, Grant contacted Luwky through Facebook. He ask Luwky to help VJing at Resistance Stage Ultra Singapore. An opportunity that can’t be missed!
“It’s quite fast! In first email, Vello asked my account number. Next thing I know, Ultra management sent me contract and accommodation arrangement”, said Luwky. After the show, Luwky received compliments from the DJ, notably John Digweed himself. Through the production manager of Resistance Stage, Digweed gave compliment and thanked him for awesome visuals. “It’s an honor to be part of Ultra family, Being a VJ for Resistance Stage to represent VsquaredLabs”, Luwky exclaimed. Luwky is a proof that Indonesian talent can go international with something they love. Luwky has some advice for aspiring VJ out there. “Develop your skills in animation. Share your free stuff to fellow VJ. Don’t forget to expand your network,” said Luwky. By joining VJ communities in various platforms, a VJ can broaden its knowledge about what’s new in VJ world. What aspect Luwky loves being a VJ? “You can feel like a rock star. If you are a DJ here, you’ll get bullied because you get old and still DJing. Being a VJ, you can take a beer and still rockin’ the stage from FOH!” Luwky laughed. Best wishes to Luwky!
